Grease

  • It is quite common for a popular Broadway play to be followed by the release of a film version with the same cast of characters and storyline. Such has been the case with several Broadway musicals, including "Grease." In 1971, Grease opened to an audience of just 100 people at the Kingston Mines Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. Earliest performances are viewed as potentially infectious, yet rough versions of what would later become the longest running play on Broadway and the recipient of multiple Tony Award nominations. Grease opened and held the title of the longest running Broadway musical until the designation was relinquished to "A Chorus Line."

Grease brought an honest, entertaining, and endearing view of the lives of high school seniors attending Rydell High School in 1959. The story focuses on the summer love of Danny and Sandy, with all the drama and humor associated with the attraction between a young man and woman born and raised on different sides of the track. Both the Broadway play and the movie featured the catchy 50's style songs, Summer Lovin', Greased Lightning, and We Go Together.

The film version of the musical Grease debuted in 1978, with the leading roles played by John Travolta, as Danny, and Olivia Newton John, as Sandy. The astounding popularity of the film revived a popular interest in and appreciation of the music, relationships, and lifetime experiences of high school seniors in the 1950's. Today, the film version remains one the most successful movie musicals.

Those who have had the pleasure of enjoying a Broadway play will usually prefer to get tickets to see a play on Broadway, as opposed to viewing the performance in a movie theatre. Though tickets to a Broadway play are more costly than movie theatre tickets and DVD rentals, the sensation of experiencing the performance live on stage is a memorable event well worth the cost of the tickets.
