In the Heights is a quintessential New York musical about a vibrant and tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. The music pulses with the hopes and dreams of three generations as they struggle to forge an identity in a neighborhood on the brink of transition.
This 2008 Tony Award®-winning Best Musical is beautiful and uplifting new show about a community of hard-working immigrants trying to make a better life and trying to find their place in their new country. With an unbelievable young cast, exhilarating Tony Award-winning dancing and a vibrant Tony Award-winning score, IN THE HEIGHTS is an lifting journey into a pulsating Manhattan community. In the Heights, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who also stars) and Quiara Alegría Hudes, will begin previews on Feb. 14, 2008, and open March 9, 2008, at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre, 226 W. 46th Street.
Music and lyrics are by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, and conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, In the Heights is directed by Thomas Kail and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler. Alex Lacamoire is music director, and music arrangements are by Lacamoire and Bill Sherman. Lin-Manuel Miranda stars in the role of Usnavi, the hip-hop-friendly Dominican who runs a bodega in Washington Heights. He serves as witness (and the audience's guide) to the diverse neighborhood, teeming with characters who keep reaching for American success, identity and happiness.
In the Heights is produced by Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller and Jill Furman.
On Broadway, In the Heights will feature scenic design by Anna Louizos, costumes by Paul Tazewell, lighting by Howell Binkley and sound by Acme Sound Partners.
