Bartlett Sher directs a revival of South Pacific, starring Kelli O'Hara and Paulo Szot. The musical South Pacific is based on James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific, and features music by Richard Rodgers. South Pacific received the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific is set on a tropical island in the Pacific during World War II, where US Navy nurse Nellie Forbush falls in love with local plantation owner Emile De Becque. Meanwhile, Lt. Joe Cable has fallen in love with young Liat, daughter of the irrepressible Bloody Mary. Both couples' happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices. Also on the island are dozens of locals and Navy, all of whom seem to break into glorious song and dance at just the right moments.
Laura Osnes succeeds Tony nominee Kelli O'Hara, who began maternity leave March 7. O'Hara is scheduled to return to the Lincoln Center Theater production Oct. 6.
Osnes is joined onstage by David Pittsinger, who returns to the production March 10 as French plantation owner Emile de Becque, while Tony winner Paulo Szot fulfills an opera commitment in Opera Toulouse's production of Carmen. Pittsinger previously filled in for Szot in the musical last December. Szot returns to South Pacific April 14.
Laura Osnes made her Broadway debut as Sandy in the 2007 revival of Grease following a talent search on the reality-television competition "Grease: You're The One That I Want." She was also recently seen in the Kennedy Center's Broadway: Three Generations concerts.
Pittsinger made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Truelove in The Rake's Progress. He went on to appear in the MET productions of Don Carlo, La Boheme, Die Zauberflote and Giulio Cesare. He also appeared in the New York City Opera's concert performance of Antony and Cleopatra at Carnegie Hall in January.
Tony winner Bartlett Sher directed the Tony-winning South Pacific revival, which also features Danny Burstein as Luther Billis, Loretta Ables Sayre as Bloody Mary, Andrew Samonsky as Lt. Joe Cable, as well as Eric Anderson, Matt Caplan, Sean Cullen, Murphy Guyer, Luka Kain, Li Jun Li, Laurissa Romain, Michael Arnold, Becca Ayers, Wendy Bergamini, Genson Blimline, Charlie Brady, Christian Carter, Eric L. Christian, Helmar Augustus Cooper, Margot de la Barre, Christian Delcroix, Laura Marie Duncan, Mike Evariste, Julie Foldesi, Rob Gallagher, Maryann Hu, Zachary James, George Merrick, Robert Lenzi, Deborah Lew, William Michals, Kimber Monroe, George Psomas, Greg Roderick and Jerold E. Solomon. The Rodgers and Hammerstein score includes numerous American songbook classics, including "Some Enchanted Evening," "Wonderful Guy," "Younger Than Springtime," "Happy Talk," Bali H'ai" and "There Is Nothing Like a Dame." The original production featured Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza.
